Email correspondence with Gloria Turner, Ph.D. Director of Assessment and Accountability with the Alabama State Department of Education:
"Alabama does not have a mechanism for opting out. As I stated earlier, testing is considered a part of the instructional program. Students that are in attendance on the day of testing are tested just as they are provided instruction if they are in attendance."
Parent reports that Turner said "if they are in attendance" twice, which I took to mean that keeping them home is the only solution (other than the student being present but not actually taking the test).
Parent reports that the Alabama Graduation Exam is the only test with specific consequences built in for refusal to take it...namely no diploma.
