FROM: ROBERT J. RODOSKY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
ACCOUNTABILITY, RESEARCH AND PLANNING
SUBJECT: IOWA TESTS OF BASIC SKILLs
DATE: April 28, 2011
The Kentucky Department of Education requires that every student who is enrolled in Grade 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 in a Kentucky public school participate in the appropriate Iowa Tests of Basics Skills (ITBS) unless the student participates in the Kentucky Alternate Assessment Program. The Jefferson County School System is required to enforce this state requirement. There are exceptions built into the system such as medical exemptions from testing if verified by a physician. Other than these certain exemptions, JCPS does not allow students to opt out of the ITBS. We also realize there are rare situations when a parent does not want his/her child to be tested.
However, if you strongly believe that your child should not participate in this state-required assessment, please fill out the attached form and return it to us. If you have any questions, you may contact your school’s Building Assessment Coordinator or principal. You may also contact Lou Spencer, Jefferson County District Assessment Coordinator, at the JCPS Testing Unit. The phone number of the JCPS Testing Unit is 485-3388.
Thank you for taking the time to read and understand this situation. We hope you’ll support your school and your child.
